Stadium and Sports Field Lighting Poles

For indoor or outdoor stadiums and sports arenas, field lighting is essential for all-year use of the facilities. Sports facilities can be places where people not only play or watch big competitions, but also actively use, socialize and play and spend time with their pets. There is a growing demand across Turkey for these facilities to have adequate lighting to meet all attendance needs.

Sports field lighting allows the fields to be used in cloudy conditions, in winter and at night. The main consideration when designing a lighting solution for large sites, commonly known as floodlighting, is the quality and quantity of light needed on site. Getting the right amount of lighting requires special poles designed to fit the right lighting configurations and lighting requirements.

Design Considerations

Depar Energy has been designing, producing and installing sports lighting solutions around the world for over 38 years. We understand and apply the importance of not only getting the lighting right, but also all other design considerations, including maintenance, safety and aesthetic appeal.

Mast Height and Site Position

All posts must be at least five meters from the edge of the playing field. The mast height can be anywhere from 2 meters to 30 meters, its length and the distance the light must reach are determined by various factors such as any houses or infrastructure surrounding the site.

Conical Poles are suitable for large areas such as sports fields and allow the installation of multiple lighting fixtures with multiple sets of lighting control gear integrated at the base of the pole. A comprehensive feasibility is required here showing the mast size and heights to be considered.

Setup

Individual computerized engineering and soil test analysis should be performed at each light pole location to ensure correct foundation design for mast height and wind load. The posts can be buried up to 12 meters and are mounted on the base plate.

Safety

A Climbing System can be attached to the poles to assist with ongoing maintenance. This allows maintenance workers to secure themselves with a harness to a secure cable that runs the length of the mast.

It may also be considered to install an Anti-Climbing System to prevent vandals from damaging the lighting and other equipment at the top of the pole.

Lightning rods can also be attached to the poles to protect the pole and equipment from lightning strikes. These help to ground potential lightning strikes without damaging the lights and structure.

Depending on the region of Turkey, the strength of the poles and other factors that may need to be considered such as wind load, cyclones or earthquakes should be considered.

Light Leakage and Glare

When we talk about 'light leakage' we mean the spillover of lighting into residential areas or other infrastructure such as roads and rail. There are also limitations on artificial lighting where spaces are located close to local wildlife habitat areas. This leakage should have a limited impact on the surrounding environment and should be considered during the planning stages of the project.

Because of the different heights and angles from where participants and spectators will be watching the game, a flare will always occur somewhere on the field. However, limiting glare is a big consideration in planning lighting direction and height, as this greatly impacts the abilities of the actors and the entertainment of the spectators.

All lighting poles are manufactured according to standards that outline the preferred dimensions for poles designed to support fixtures and auxiliary equipment for illuminating roads and other open public spaces.
